1961 WATKINS GLEN US GRAND PRIX

After three years of formula libre races the US Grand Prix was awarded to Watkins Glen. It stayed there until 1980. For the BARCBOYS it was heaven. We were chosen to tow the BRM team from their garage in downtown Watkins Glen to the track and back. The weather was spectacular and the racing was tight. Innes Ireland won after prolonged battles with a half dozen protagonists. It was the first grand prix win for the Lotus factory. Walt Hansgen, Roger Pesnke, Hap Sharp, Jim Hall and Lloyd Ruby were all making a one off and Masten Gregory drove for the UDT team. Two time world champion Jack Brabham had the new Climax V8 in his Cooper. Rob Walker got a V8 for Moss but he decided not to use it in the race. Every other car used the ubiquitous Climax 1.5 four cylinder. Just 60 miles from our home town there was a world championship grand prix.

Almost all these photos were taken by barc member Rolf “Bud” Hofer; Thanks Bud

A real battle for the lead. Ireland barely ahead of Gurney’s Porsche and Hill’s BRM. Gurney would push Ireland all the way finishing just over 4 seconds back in 2nd place.

Moss is out on race day. He chose this 4 cylinder Lotus over the V8 as he liked the way it handled. He chose correctly as he had the lead at the half way point only to have his motor fail.
