WATKINS GLEN FORMULA LIBRE RACES 1958-1959

Joachim Bonnier is brought in with a Maserati F1 car to showcase the Glen course. Phil Hill and Dan Gurney appear with Ferrari sports cars and Watkins Glen creates its first international race. The next year, 1959, the most famous international race driver, Stirling Moss appears with a current F1 Cooper to dominate.

 Bonnier did not have it easy as Gurney in the Ferrari sports car chased him the entire race finishing just over 1 minute behind.

 Bonnier was a bona fide International star.  The 250F Maserati was one of the great F1 cars of that era.  It was a big deal to have them at Watkins Glen.

 We knew #22 as The Sadler Special which on the Glen Classic earlier in 1958.  Today it was known as the Nisonger Special and driven by Bob Said but did not finish.  Bob is the father of Boris Said.

 1959 was cold but better than ‘58 with  a bigger field including those pesky USAC midgets which proved fast earlier in the year at Lime Rock. But nobody could come close to Sir Stirling Moss in his Cooper Climax F1 car.
