1961 WATKINS GLEN GRAND PRIX

A huge modified field was entered that included Bob Bucher’s RSK Porsche fighting for the National Championship with Tom Payne. Payne couldn’t beat Bucher fair and square and showed up with a 1700cc engine - he was caught and DQ’d. Sherm Decker didn’t have a car to drive and took David Morris’ street MGA, prepped it and won FP. Bob Poupard was getting quicker in his twin cam, Rip Ripley dnf’d in his Elva. A wonderful weekend of racing. This was the last of the glorious Glen Grand Prix for sports cars. In a month the Glen held the US Grand Prix and slowly the SCCA races faded into history. Enjoy this pictorial history.

Fantastic race between the Ferrari of Constantine and the Maserati of Hansgen. Constantine makes his pass at the hairpin leading onto the last lap. The winners were just 5 seconds apart in one of the best Grand Prix races we remember.
