Moss had a boring race as he was completely dominant. He lapped the 2nd place car 7 times. Regardless, the Glen had drawn the worlds #1 driver to its race and he performed.

Ed Johnson’s midget was 2nd overall. Several midgets showed up after Roger Ward won the USAC race at Lime Rock. The day was cold and damp, but the midgets kept going and 6 of the 10 entered, finished.

You can see from this photo the weather turned very cold and wet with even some snow flurries. The midgets kept going as best they could, but a third did not finish.

Bob Holbert came back for the Libre race in his Porsche. He ran second to Moss for the nearly the first 3rd of the race but his gearbox gave up after 28 laps.

The car Moss drove was owned by the British Racing Partnership of Ken Gregory and Alfred Moss. Yes, Alfred Moss was Stirling’s father. BRP did well with their barf green and red cars which continued on as UDT Laystall in F1.

Bob Kahmer campaigned his Lotus Bristol up and down the east coast in 1959. He raced the Glen GP in September and returned there for the Formula Libre race in October.

The big Aston-Martin of George Constantine was second in the sport car Grand Prix to Walt Hansgen’s Lister-Jag. The two battled all year for the SCCA championship.

Bob Holbert rolls to the starting grid. Holbert used the #140 at both the sportscar grand prix and the Formula Libre race. This was not his year and he could do no better than 3rd Porsche at the Grand Prix and DNF at the Libre.

The fearsome Kelco Chev in the hands of Freddy Windridge. Fred led to the chicane but the car failed him soon after. The BARCBOYS gave Fred a cigarette when he abandoned the car.

The last iteration of the Sadler MkIII. Everyone pulled for the super underdog Bill Sadler, but as fast as his cars were, they were fragile and again at the Glen, both the Grand Prix and Libre it failed to finish.

The BARC was well represented at Watkins Glen. Sherm Decker, with his wife Joan and garage owner Gordy Morris coming home from a victory lap.

Bob Bucher had sold his beastly Allard. He wanted a lighter, better handling car and bought this Lotus Club. Bucher did well with it, but the car was never a favorite. He did just the one season and went to old friend Bob Holbert and bought a Porsche RSK.

Ed Gelder in the chicane during the Glen Classic. This summer race was only a regional but it drew hundreds of entrants and became a fixture in the 50’s and early 60’s. Gelder would win the feature Glen Classic race.

On the grid prior to the start. Gelders 3.5 Ferrari Monza next to the 2 liter Ferrari Mondial that was driven by Don Peters.

Local car dealer Jim Forno in this beautiful Cisitalia sits on the grid next to Roundtree’s MGA twincam. We’re not sure why the MG was in the modified race

Forno leans into the exit of the chicane headed down the Loop. This part of the track exists today. Heading back to the start finish for NASCAR and going down to the Boot for the full road course.

Rochesters Dave Adams in his Lotus IX still with the climaz motor. Dave would install an Alfa motor and renamed the car a LoFa. He always drove well and did well. Later earning wins in a TR-3.

Don Peters in the Mondial. Don was handicapped with only one arm but arranged a waiver from the SCCA. He drove several cars over the years, almost exclusively at the Glen or tracks nearby.

Jim Flynn is an old Ferrari 212 ex leads Forno. This Ferrari raced in the northeast for years. The previous year this car was raced by Don Peters who drove the Mondial this day. Flynn would dnf.

Arch Means AC Bristol next to George Valentine’s Morgan. Valentine was An SCCA GP champ in years past and Means would become a many time winner in the A CBristol.

Bob Bucher in Spankey Smith’s now famous 029 MGA. Bucher had to jump from his race 1 winning Lotus 11 into the MGA for the MG event. He won both races

Tex Hopkins, always present cigar in his mouth, presents the winners flag to Bucher, which Spankey Smith quickly grabs before heading out on the victory lap.

BARC driver Ted Rounds in his 1957 Sebring MGA next to Monte Allen’s MGA. They finished 2nd and 3rd behind Bucher. Allen was the Mayor of upstate Cobleskill, NY

Hal Keck slides inside an Austin Healey as he approaches the tight right turn leading down the Loop. Keck would go on to dominate NE big production racing in his 427 Cobra. He won BP at the Classic easily.

Harold Keck has won and gets his checkered flag and huge wreath. Hal was a fun guy and somehow convinced the rather stodgy timers to allow him polka dot numbers.

Frank Wagenhofer made the trip over from his shop in Montgomery NY and brought his Carrera to the Glen. Frank won easily. Not even Sherm Decker’s skills could overcome the 4 cams power

Smoke at the start of the G & H production race. I can’t remember but my guess is an HM special is spewing 2 stroke smoke rather than smoking the tires.

Bud Fehnel’s DB beat all the Sprites to take 1st in HP and 12th overall behind the GP Alfa’s.

BARC mentor Sherm Decker wears a cowboy hat in his twincam MGA. Sonny Gibbons is next to him in another twincam. The only time Decker was beaten in MG’s was when he broke down or the Porsche Carrera’s showed up before they were reclassified to go against the big bore cars.
