1970 RIVERSIDE CAN AM PROGRAM

The winner Denny Hulme dominated the CanAm in 70 winning 6 races. A very sad year as the boss, Bruce McLaren was killed just before the season started.

Jacki Oliver in the Titanium Ti22 Chev. Oliver was 4th quickest and after the Chaparral dropped out ran a lonely 2nd behind Hulme. Jackie got within 5 seconds but by that point, Hulme was coasting.

The BRM CanAm car. Here it’s Pedro Rodriquez on his way to 3rd. George Eaton’s similar car broke in practice and never started.

The unusual looking March CanAm car of Chris Amon was very fast and finished 4th. Gotta love those STP stickers.

Lothar Motschenbacher in an iconic photo location for Riverside. Lothar entered two cars, with him finishing 5th and Tony Adomowicz finishing 7th.

Bobby Brown #3 McLaren leads Lothar’s #11. Lothar would finish 5th and Brown 6th.

Tony Adamowicz in the #12 Motschenbacher McLaren spins. Tony gathered it up and finished 7th.

One of the most brilliant designs ever from the Chaparral shops. The sucker car driven by Vic Elford. The car far outclassed the McLarens everywhere it went but failed to finish.

Elford led easily but here is dropping back into the grips of Peter Gethin’s second factory McLaren. Elford was 2 seconds a lap faster than Hulme in qualifying but dropped back immediately when the aux motor driving the fans failed. He was out by lap 5.

Peter Gethin’s #7 McLaren closes in on Peter Revson’s Lola. Revson was fast, qualifying 3rd but only lasted 9 laps. Gethin would not fare much better dropping out on lap 21 of 61.

Chuck Parsons #10 Lola was out after only 10 laps.

Peter Revson closely followed by BARC racer the late Oscar Koveleski and Chris Amon.

Dick Guldstrand, of Corvette fame, is about to be lapped by Chris Amon. Guldstrand did well and finished 11th

Dick Smith goes wide while Skeeter McKitterick in the Len Terry CanAm car goes under the oil dry. Smith’s McLaren is headed for trouble.

Smith’s McLaren has pulled off the road as McKitterick slides by. Smith’s car was wounded and caught fire.

Hard to see through the tire smoke who is spinning here but you can see 3 cars are involved.

The CanAm race was the feature, but there was a full weekend of SCCA racing. Is the Alfa passing the Vette on the outside? Or is the Vette pushing the Alfa aside?
