A rare occurence. 4 Ferrari GTO’s ready to race. Roger Penske #85, Innes Ireland #4, Lorenzo Bandini #21 and behind Bandini, Bob Grossman.

The Tourist Trophy cars are lined up for the start. Note the Galaxie, Falcon and Corvair in the field.

Bill Krause in one of Shelby’s earliest Cobra’s leads Ireland and Penske in Ferrari’s and Dieringer’s Galaxie..

Bandini passes the pits and a Shelby crewman shows the pit board to Billy Krause who is running 3rd.

Krause has seen the sign and leads Ireland. The Cobra would not finish, Ireland placed 3rd.

Things have settled down as Penske leads Innes Ireland with a barely interested spectator behind the haybales.

Roger Penske receives the Tourist Trophy from (we think) Governor of the Bahamas, Sir Robert Stapledon. Car owner John Mecom on the right with perfect hair.

Krause sits in his car after the race in his #98 Cobra. John Everly’s #106 sits behind. Neither Cobra finished well.

Formula 1 star Lorenzo Bandini finished 2nd in the TT and 8th in a Ferrari 268SP in the feature Trophy race.

The real business of December in the Bahamas. Sitting by the pool and then being annoyed because there is a race to run.

The Porsche factory brought a 718 WR-S which meant it had the F1 8 cylinder engine. Holbert used it well finishing 2nd in every race.

Teh German mechanics do maintenance. You can clearly see the 8 stacks for the new 8 cylinder engine.

Bill “Murph” Mayberry got to drive Holbert’s usual Porsche RS-61. Murph won the Porsche - Alfa challenge but had some problems in the big race.

A Brumos 356 Carerra Porsche. Lin Coleman raced it and did well winning the 2 liter GT class, beating an Abarth-Porsche. We’re not sure if that is Coleman behind the car.

George Reed’s Ferrari 59/60 Testa Rossa is loaded to the ship from the docks. Reed only raced once, but it was good for 10th in the feature Nassau Trophy race.

What now is a priceless collection of race cars sits on the docks waiting to be loaded up and returned to Miami.

Marvin Panch drove a Holman Moody Ford Falcon without much luck. It dnf’d everytime out. Derell Dieringer had a Ford Galaxie which fared much better including a 7th overall.

1964 NASSAU SPEEDWEEKS PROGRAM

Gurney’s Arciero Lotus XIX arrives on Nassau. The car was, as usual, very fast but dnf’d in the main race.

Preparations for the nicely painted VW beetle to be raced by A.J. Foyt. Nassau always had some fun races for the pros to race with the amateurs.

A red VW sponsored by Holbert’s Garage and Top Gear magazine. The engine blew, but driver/mechanic Murph Mayberry and friends got it back together in time for the race.

In the 1964 VW Grand Prix - Foyt got a push from Dan Gurney to win the race.

One of the features was the Formula Vee race. These races often featured pro drivers.

Start of the big race - Skip Hudson’s Cooper nearly slides into Roger Penske’s Chaparral. Sharp’s Chaparral is out and A.J. Foyt in the Mecom Hussein comes out in pit lane.

Cars form up on the parade lap prior to the Governors race. The Nassau Trophy had a LeMans start; the Governors a standing start.

Ken Miles big motor Cobra was a dnf all weekend. Skip Scott’s Mustang fared better with a 1st and a 3rd in GT over 5 liters.

John Mecom pushes his Hussein Dodge Hemi off the docks. A.J. Foyt drove the car several times. It was fast, but fragile. The car now lives in the Indianapolis Hall of Fame museum.

Ken Miles leads the TT race with Jack Saunders and Penske in Corvette Grand Sports behind. Miles engine would break. Penske would win.
