1959 CUMBERLAND scca national

Return to the BARCBOYS home page

Why Cumberland was so popular is not easily defined. The airport track was basically a triangle with a chicane and runway change. The spectators packed out a hill where they could see the entire track. Seeing this, the organizers placed the finish line just below the hill so everyone could see the winner. But the start line was on the opposite side of the track. Better yet, there was a tight turn about 200’ past the finish line and at times finishers racing for position would simply not think about making the corner and blow past the flag. Cumberland is a long way from anywhere yet it drew a big entry from its beginning in 1953.
