It was a busy Spring for racing. VIR was just two weeks after Marlboro and two weeks before Cumberland. The fights between Walt Hangen and Don Sessler continued, with Sessler’s Porsche starting back a few rows and having to work hard to catch Hansgen’s Lister. He almost made it but could not duplicate his Marlboro win. While located far in the country, the VIR track was so fun and challenging the entry was big. Most of these photos are from the great Harlan Hadley. We’re honored to bring them to you, with more to come from other events.
An unusual but stunning rear photo of Hansgen at speed. Yes, that is a tree very close to the track. VIR held its first race in late summer 1957. VIR, Lime Rock, Laguna Seca all opened in 1957 and there were no guidelines as to safety or construction. Those original designs, along with Watkins Glen and Road America survive today and are among the finest.
