One of the most popular eastern tracks, Thompson had been around since the early 50’s. The BIG weekend was on Labor Day for the SCCA national races. What the eastern drivers raced was far different from the west coast. The G.I’s back from WWII and Korea built the Scarabs, brought new Ferrari’s and Maserati’s for young Phil Hill, Dan Gurney and Richie Ginther. The east had older men like Walt Hansgen, George Constantine, Bob Holbert. The east coast racers brought old formula 1 cars or built home made specials, many from Jaguars or Austin Healeys. Briggs Cunningham dominated with his Jaguar connection until Elisha Walker brought over an Aston Martin that was every bit as quick as the Listers and the new Porsche’s were always in the hunt.
